Sure, there were the shortform shows around town, but they weren't what they used to be. I'd never seen a more ambious and brilliant display of raw, guerilla acting in all my life. Two hours and six minutes later, I was smitten. Originally I had come to see a second rate local film, but quickly changed my mind and decided to take a risk with the KYSOff show.

But I didn't go see a movie the week following my birthday, I saw a short/long form show at Trolley Square Live (TSL - then home of Quick Wits and Knock Your Socks Off). It was a thrilling experience for me, one which I had waited for eagerly. Last September I entered the age where I could legally see an R-rated movie with my parent or guardian tagging along with me. In some ways it feels like I'm starting all over again. I'll be going home in a week and reuniting with my troupe: Knock Your Socks Off. However, my experience here has been quite different than that of my improv "career" in my hometown, under the Zion Curtain, of Salt Lake City. It's been fun, I've learned a lot, and met a lot of cool people. I still have that feeling every time I go on stage.Īt the moment, I'm in smog blanketed Los Angeles, CA finishing up a summer semester screenwriting course at USC. You are a part of something that feels bigger than you can comprehend. That is still what it feels like to be in improv.

Holmes and Dirk both then turned to crime and drugs, and while the shootout at the drug dealer's (played by Alfred Molina) house is not in any way similar to the notorious Wonderland Murders Holmes was involved in, they no doubt served as inspiration at least in some part."I'm a star.I'm a star, I'm star.I'm a big, beautiful star." Holmes was the same way, and just like Dirk in the film, his cocaine addiction made it so that he had trouble getting an erection, which is a death sentence in that industry as one can imagine.

Besides that, the film also follows the general arc of Dirk becoming famous, then getting addicted to cocaine, then torching his porn acting career because of it. The detail about his huge penis carried over, and much like the movies Jack Horner ( Burt Reynolds) directed, the Johnny Wadd films that gave Holmes his big break were very similar private investigator porno/action films to the ones Dirk becomes famous for. While all the characters and events were created for the film, it still takes quite a bit of inspiration from John Holmes's life. This isn't to say that everything in Boogie Nights is fictional.

Boogie Nights, while harrowing at times for many of its characters, has an ending that could ostensibly be called a happy one, which can't be said for Holmes's own life story. Other details, such as Holmes's involvement in the Wonderland Murders, his grooming and abuse of a 15-year-old girlfriend when he was 32, his work in homosexual porno films, and his death from AIDS were all left out of Dirk Diggler's life as well. Holmes was able to get away with his job by often being an informant for the LAPD vice squad. Holmes also worked at a time when the legality of the porn industry was in question, partly seen in Boogie Nights with the Colonel. John was born in Ohio and moved to California when he was an adult, spent time in the military, and by most accounts had a good relationship with his mother all unlike Dirk. For one, Holmes was actually much older than Dirk, being born in the 40s instead of the 60s, and starting his career in the early 70s instead of the late 70s. While there are plenty of details from Holmes's life that Anderson included in Boogie Nights, there are still quite a few big differences as well.
